Halldorson inducted to Wayzata HS Athletics Hall of Fame
We send a shout-out and a big congratulations to inaugural Gopher Women's Hockey head coach Laura Halldorson, who was inducted into the Wayzata High School Athletics Hall of Fame yesterday, earning a Trojan Award as a Wayzata alumnus/alumna who has been notably successful in athletics after their high school graduation.
Halldorson was a four-sport athlete during her high school years at Wayzata and was among the first players in the girls' youth hockey program and the Wayzata Checkers team. From there, she'd go on to play at Princeton University in college, then move into the coaching ranks after graduation. She returned to Wayzata H.S. as part-time assistant coach for volleyball, basketball, and softball before heading back to Princeton to be an assistant coach of the Tigers' women's hockey and softball teams for two seasons. Halldorson moved up to a head coaching position with the Colby College women's hockey team in Maine for seven years before being hired by the U. of M. in 1996 to lead its new varsity women's hockey program.
Under Halldorson's leadership, the Gophers posted a 278-67-22 record (.787), winning three national championships (2000, 2004 & 2005). She also earn national coach of the year honors three times, and was inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame in 2014.
