WCHA Playoff Quarterfinals (best-of-three) at Ridder Arena
#4/4 Minnesota Golden Gophers (25-7-2, 19-7-2-2 in WCHA)
vs.
Minnesota State University Mavericks (12-23-0, 6-22-0-0)
Friday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m.
(if necessary) Sunday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m.

The Gopher Women's Hockey team enters the WCHA Playoff Tournament as the #3 seed, hosting the 6th-seeded Minnesota State University Mavericks in a best-of-three quarterfinal series at Ridder Arena.  Action begins Friday evening, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. and continues Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m.  If necessary, a deciding Game 3 will be played Sunday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m.

Game coverage – Video from all three contests will be streamed on the B1G+ subscription service.  As always, free audio play-by-play will be streamed on GopherSports.com starting 15 to 20 minutes before puck drop (Friday & Saturday; Sunday's link to be provided as necessary).

This season against Minnesota State – The Gophers completed a season sweep of the Mavericks in a pair of home-and-home series, though the combined goal differential was only 5 as three of the four games were decided by a single goal.  Minnesota earned 3-1 and 2-1 victories in early November, then posted 4-3 and 2-1 (OT) wins at the end of January.  Abbey Murphy led the Gophers with 5 points against MSU on 3 goals and 2 assists, including a two-goal, one-assist performance on January 26 at Ridder Arena.  Peyton Hemp added two goals & two assists, while Josefin Bouveng, Ella Huber, Emma Kreisz, and Nelli Laitinen each recorded a goal and 3 assists.  Jamie Nelson posted two goals and an assist for the Mavericks against Minnesota, all coming on January 26, while Alexis Paddington and Lilie Ramirez each dished out two helpers.  Skylar Vetter & Lucy Morgan split the four games for the Gophers; Vetter stopped 57 of 61 shots, while Morgan made 35 saves on 37 shots.  MSU netminder Suzette Faucher entered the first meeting in relief and started the second & third contests, making a combined 63 saves but yielding 8 goals; Hailey Hansen started the first game before leaving due to injury, but was back to start the fourth contest, stopping a combined 43 of 46 shots.

Analyzing the Mavericks – Finishing 6th in the WCHA regular season standings, Minnesota State saw three big streaks in their results.  After opening the season with a non-conference series sweep, they dropped their next 10 games; they won 8 of the following 10 (including four non-conference victories) but then suffered another 9-game losing streak.  They're 2-2-0 in their last four contests.

MSU averaged 2.60 goals per game across all contests, good for fourth in the WCHA, but 39 of their 91 goals came in non-conference action; considering only league play, they were sixth with a 1.86 average.  Four Mavericks each recorded more than 20 points on the season (all games).  Senior Sydney Langseth (#3) had a team-high 31 points and 17 assists while lighting the lamp 14 times herself.  Senior Jamie Nelson (#10) led the Mavericks with 18 goals and added 9 assists for 27 points.  Sophomore Whitney Tuttle (#7) recorded 25 points on 10 goals & 15 assists, while classmate Taylor Otremba (#24) tallied 21 points on 8 goals & 13 helpers.

Junior Suzette Faucher (#31) posted a 3-10-0 record between the pipes for MSU, with a 3.47 goals-against average and an .884 save percentage.  Freshman Hailey Hansen (#33) saw much of the action late in the season, entering the playoffs with a 3-8-0 record, one shutout, a 2.81 GAA and .898 SV%.  Sophomore Avery Stilwell (#1) remains the Mavericks' emergency backup.  However, as we noted in January, senior Lauren Barbro was no longer listed on the Minnesota State roster after going 6-5-0 in 11 starts earlier in the year with one shutout, a 2.62 GAA, and a .904 SV%.

Last weekend for Minnesota State – After already locking in their 6th-place finish in the conference standings, the Mavericks played a home-and-home series against a St. Thomas squad looking to escape the cellar.  The Tommies took a 2-0 lead at the second intermission of the opener in Mankato and Rylee Bartz hit an empty-netter with 44.6 seconds left; that wasn't the end as Alexis Paddington & Jamie Nelson lit the lamp for Minnesota State over the next 21.4 seconds, but St. Thomas held on for the 3-2 win.  MSU and UST traded goals throughout the rematch in Mendota Heights with neither taking a lead of more than one; Paddington tallied her 2nd and 3rd goals of the weekend and Nelson added a goal & an assist, but the contest finished regulation tied 4-4.  Bartz then tallied her second game-winning goal in as many days, finding the back of the net 36 seconds into overtime for a 5-4 Tommies victory and series sweep.  Calla Frank earned both wins for St. Thomas with 51 saves, while Hailey Hansen stopped a combined 31 shots for Minnesota State.

Gophers conclude regular-season with tie, win against UMD

Gopher Women's Hockey claimed five points in their final series of the 2023-2024 regular season, playing Minnesota Duluth to a 1-1 tie Friday with a 1-0 shootout win for the extra point followed by a 4-2 victory on Senior Day Saturday.

Mary Kate O'Brien lit the lamp unassisted for the Bulldogs in the first period of the opener, capitalizing on a Gopher turnover, but Abbey Murphy evened the score on a second-stanza power play, her 30th goal, 50th point, and 12th PPG of the season.  From there, Gopher goaltender Skylar Vetter and Bulldog netminder Hailey MacLeod locked things down; the contest went to and through overtime as Vetter and MacLeod each made 26 saves.  Ella Huber beat MacLeod in the first round of the shootout, and UMD failed to score on its three attempts with two saves by Vetter.

Madison Kaiser put Minnesota up with the team's second power-play conversion of the weekend in the first period Saturday, and Peyton Hemp doubled the lead in the second frame.  The teams exchanged goals in the third; Mannon McMahon cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 2-1 just 1:18 into the stanza but Emma Kreisz restored the Gophers' two-goal lead with another power-play tally and 5:22 remaining.  O'Brien netted her second goal of the series with an extra attacker and 1:15 to play, but Murphy broke free and scored into an empty net with 5.5 seconds remaining.  Lucy Morgan stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win, while UMD's Ève Gascon made 26 saves.

Hemp and Kaiser each had an assist to accompany their respective goals in the series, and Ava Lindsay dished out three helpers in Saturday's contest.

Gigi Marvin nets first PWHL goal, Abby Boreen rejoins MN roster

Gopher Women's Hockey alumna Gigi Marvin, a three-time U.S. Olympian having previously played in the Western Women's Hockey League, Canadian Women's Hockey League, and Premier Hockey Federation, tallied her first goal in the Professional Women's Hockey League as a member of the Boston franchise in their 2-0 win over Minnesota this past Sunday at the Xcel Energy Center.  Marvin has also recorded 3 assists in Boston's 12 games so far this season.  Congratulations, Gigi!!

Prior to Sunday's contest, the PWHL announced that Gopher alumna Abby Boreen had signed a second 10-day Standard Player Agreement with Minnesota.  Boreen returned to the lineup against Boston and also played last night against Toronto, her sixth and seventh games of the season.  In her first call-up, she recorded two goals and an assist.  Under league rules, Boreen will only be available through the end of the current agreement due to her status as a full-time graduate student at the U. of M.

The spot Boreen filled on Minnesota's roster opened when the team designated yet another Gopher alum, top draft pick Taylor Heise, to long-term injured reserve.  We send wishes to Taylor for a full and quick recovery.

Around the WCHA

Buckeyes, Badgers split marquee series in Madison – In a meeting of the top two teams in the national rankings, Ohio State and Wisconsin each claimed a come-from-behind win to split their weekend series at LaBahn Arena.  Maddi Wheeler put the Badgers up 1-0 in the second period on Friday, but Kiara Zanon, Makenna Webster, and Jenna Buglioni (power play, empty net) responded for a 3-1 Buckeyes victory.  Kenzie Hauswirth lit the lamp twice to put OSU up 2-0 after 20 minutes of Saturday's rematch, but Casey O'Brien pulled Wisconsin within one in the second stanza and knotted the score midway through the third.  Laila Edwards also tallied twice, putting the Badgers ahead just 68 seconds later and tacking on an empty-netter in the final 10 seconds for a 4-2 win.

Huskies sweep Beavers in Bemidji – Greta Henderson recorded a hat trick Friday and added an assist Saturday, Emma Gentry netted her own hat trick Saturday after a goal & an assist on Friday, Katie Kaufman tallied two goals and two assists in the series, and Jojo Chobak & Sanni Ahola combined to stop 35 of 38 shots as St. Cloud State earned a road sweep of Bemidji State, 5-1 & 6-2.  Shelby Breiland, Talya Hendrickson, and Olivia Dronen lit the lamp for BSU, and Eva Filippova & Abbie Thompson combined for 61 saves.

Senior Weekend / Regular Season Finale
#4/4 Minnesota Golden Gophers (24-7-1, 18-7-1-1 in WCHA)
vs.
#8/8 Univ. of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (18-11-3, 15-10-1-0)

Friday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m.
Ridder Arena

The 2023-2024 regular season concludes with Senior Weekend for the Gopher Women's Hockey team at Ridder Arena.  Adding to that, they face the rival Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a national top-ten series, starting Friday evening, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. and continuing Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m.

"Senior" recognition on Saturday – All fans are encouraged to arrive early for Saturday's contest as the team recognizes its graduate student and senior players during a special pre-game ceremony!!

Game coverage – Video from both contests will be streamed on the B1G+ subscription service, and free audio play-by-play will be on GopherSports.com (Friday and Saturday) starting 15 to 20 minutes before puck drop.

This season against Minnesota Duluth – Minnesota returned from a November series at AMSOIL Arena with back-to-back 3-1 victories over UMD, never trailing during the weekend.  Though the Bulldogs took a 14-4 shots-on-goal advantage after the first 20 minutes of the opener, the game remained scoreless.  Abbey Murphy put the Gophers in front in the second period, burying a one-timer on a power play.  Hanna Baskin evened the score for Minnesota Duluth 9:13 into the third period, but Taylor Stewart lit the lamp less than two minutes later to restore the lead, Peyton Hemp added an empty-netter, and Skylar Vetter stopped 32 of 33 shots for the win.  After another scoreless first period in the rematch, Ella Huber completed a nice passing play from Murphy & Josefin Bouveng to again put Minnesota ahead.  Later in the second, Murphy got free on a short-handed breakaway; her first shot was stopped, but she collected the rebound, spun, and scored for a 2-0 lead.  Gabby Krause pulled the Bulldogs within one in the third stanza, but Hemp netted the Gophers' second shorty of the game 47 seconds later and Lucy Morgan made 28 saves on 29 shots.  Bouveng & Audrey Wethington each dished out two assists in the series.  UMD netminder Ève Gascon recorded a combined 62 saves in the two contests.

Analyzing the Bulldogs – Minnesota Duluth is firmly on the bubble for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, sitting in ninth place in the latest Pairwise Ranking estimates.  They are the highest team in the national rankings having double-digits losses for the season.  Still, following a four-game skid against Ohio State and Wisconsin to end January, they are undefeated (5-0-1) so far in February, passing St. Cloud State for fourth place in the WCHA standings and clinching home ice for the opening round of the league playoffs.

Offensively, UMD is in the middle of the pack among WCHA teams, averaging 2.44 goals per game.  Graduate transfer Reece Hunt (#29) is leading the Bulldogs with 17 goals and 28 totals points, along with dishing out 11 assists.  Another grad student, forward Mannon McMahon (#16), just set a Minnesota Duluth record for playing in her 166th consecutive game at the school; she and senior Olivia Wallin (#14) are tied with a team-high 15 assists.  McMahon is second in total scoring, lighting the lamp 10 times for 25 points, while Wallin has 5 goals for 20 points.  The veteran leadership continues as senior Clara Van Wieran (#25) has 21 points on 12 goals and 9 assists.

Between the pipes, sophomore Hailey MacLeod (#35) and Ève Gascon (#1) have been solid as each posted their 5th shutout this past weekend (more on that momentarily).  Gascon's fifth clean sheet set a new UMD freshman record; she's got an 8-7-2 record with a 1.52 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.  MacLeod is 10-4-1 in her 15 starts, sporting a 1.14 GAA and .958 SV%.  Another freshman, Anna Byczek (#31), has not seen any official action.

Last weekend for Minnesota Duluth – In a goaltending showdown, the Bulldogs earned a 1-0 win and a 0-0 tie against the visiting St. Cloud State Huskies.  Jojo Chobak made 28 saves for SCSU in the opener, but yielded a third-period goal to UMD's Clara Van Wieran while Hailey MacLeod stopped all 39 shots she faced at the other end; the win earned MacLeod the WCHA Goaltender of the Week honor.  In the rematch, Chobak and Ève Gascon posted matching shutouts; Chobak stopped another 30 shots, while Gascon made 39 saves, including one on an overtime penalty shot, earning her the award as WCHA Rookie of he Week.  The subsequent shootout after the tie was not so great for the netminders, though, as five of the six shooters lit the lamp; Hanna Baskin and Van Wieran scored for the Bulldogs but Olivia Wallin missed, while Emma Gentry, Laura Zimmerman, and Sofianna Sundelin found the back of the net for the Huskies to take the third WCHA standings point.

Gophers fall twice to Badgers – Josefin Bouveng scored twice in the third period of Minnesota's opener at Wisconsin last Friday, her second coming on a power play with an extra attacker to knot the score at 3-3 and force overtime.  However, Laila Edwards lit the lamp for the Badgers in the extra session to defeat the Gophers, 4-3.  Peyton Hemp opened the scoring in the first period, but Wisconsin tallied twice in the second stanza for a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.  Bouveng's first goal evened the score at 2-2 early in the third, but Britta Curl gave the Badgers another lead before Bouveng's second goal late in regulation.  Skylar Vetter made 31 saves and Abbey Murphy dished out a pair of assists; Jane Gervais stopped 26 shots for Wisconsin.  In the rematch, Badgers goaltender Ava McNaughton stopped all 17 shots she faced and Kirsten Simms posted a 3-point performance on two goals & an assist en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Gophers; Lucy Morgan made 27 saves for the Maroon & Gold.

Minnesota to host Minnesota State in WCHA Quarterfinals – Following last weekend's results around the WCHA (see our league recap below for summaries of the other two series), the Gopher Women's Hockey team will finish 3rd in the conference regular-season standings and will host the 6th-place Minnesota State Mavericks at Ridder Arena to open the playoffs.  The best-of-three series will be played Friday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m.; and (if necessary) Sunday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m.

Around the WCHA...

Mavericks sweep Beavers in Mankato – Taylor Otremba tallied two goals & two assists, Sydney Langseth added two goals and an assist, and Hailey Hansen stopped 35 of a combined 37 shots, including all 21 she faced on Friday, to lead Minnesota State to 4-0 and 5-2 wins at home against Bemidji State.  Alyssa Watkins and Riley Reeves scored for BSU and Eva Filippova made a combined 47 saves.

Upcoming games – Only pride and the national rankings will be on the line when #1 Ohio State makes their shortest road trip within the conference, visiting #2 Wisconsin.  Meanwhile, eyes will be watching the other two series as only the bottom two positions in the league standings remain undecided; Minnesota State will face St. Thomas in a home-and-home matchup starting in Mankato, while Bemidji State hosts St. Cloud State.

#5/5 Minnesota Golden Gophers (24-5-1, 18-5-1-1 in WCHA)
vs.
#2/2 University of Wisconsin Badgers (26-4-0, 20-4-0-0)

Friday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m.
LaBahn Arena – Madison, WI

The Gopher Women's Hockey team heads out on its last road trip of the 2023-2024 regular season, traveling to Madison for the next round of the Border Battle against the #2-ranked Wisconsin Badgers.  Action at LaBahn Arena begins Friday, February 16, at 7:00 p.m. and continues with the rematch Saturday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Game coverage – Video from both contests will be streamed on the B1G+ subscription service, and free audio play-by-play will be on GopherSports.com (Friday and Saturday) starting 15 to 20 minutes before puck drop.

This season against Wisconsin – The Badgers paid a visit to Ridder Arena to close out the 2023 portion of the schedule in December.  In the opener, Abbey Murphy lit the lamp twice, Sadie Lindsay netted her second career goal, Solveig Neunzert tallied her first goal in Maroon & Gold, Nelli Laitinen also scored, and Lucy Morgan made 33 saves at the other end of the ice to lead Minnesota to a 5-3 victory.  Kirsten Simms recorded a goal and an assist for the Badgers, but Jane Gervais made only 17 saves.  Josefin Bouveng put the Gophers up 1-0 in the second period of the rematch, but the Badgers responded with five-straight goals, two coming from Lacey Eden, for a 5-1 win and series split.  Simms recorded another goal & assist for a four-point weekend, and Ava McNaughton stopped 23 of 24 shots.  Skylar Vetter made 36 saves for Minnesota.

Analyzing the Badgers – Wisconsin started the season by winning their first 12 games. After suffering a 1-4 stretch in late November and December, losing twice to Ohio State, once to UMD, and once to the Gophers, they've gone on another 13-game winning streak.  They lead all WCHA teams in scoring offense with a 5.40 goals-per-game average, while yielding a paltry 1.43 goals per contest (2nd in the league).  However, despite their performance, they will need help to catch the Buckeyes for the WCHA Regular-Season Championship.

Speaking to their offense, five of the top six WCHA skaters in total scoring and six of the top seven in points-per-game are Badgers.  Sophomore Kirsten Simms (#27) has a team-leading 56 points & 25 goals, averaging 2.00 points-per-game, while dishing out 31 assists.  Senior Casey O'Brien (#26) has a team-high 37 assists while lighting the lamp 15 times herself for 52 points.  Grad student Britta Curl (#17; 17g, 31a) and redshirt junior Lacey Eden (#6; 23g, 22a) have also eclipsed the 40-point mark with 48 & 45, respectively.  A pair of sophomores has also passed the 30-point mark: Laila Edwards (#10) has 39 points on 12 goals & 27 assists, while defender Caroline Harvey (#4) has 5 goals and 26 assists for 31 points in only 21 games.

In goal, redshirt junior Jane Gervais (#1) and freshman Ava McNaughton (#30) have matching 13-2-0 records.  Gervais has 6 shutouts with a 1.40 goal-against average and a .925 save percentage.  McNaughton has 3 shutouts, a slightly better .930 SV%, and a 1.50 GAA.  Another freshman, Chloe Baker (#32), made a one-period relief appearance against Bemidji State in October, stopping all 7 shots she faced.

Last weekend for Wisconsin – A road trip to Bemidji provided little difficulty for the Badgers; they shut out the Beavers with 10-0 and 7-0 victories for the series sweep.  Kirsten Simms led the Badgers with a 7-point weekend, getting a hat trick in Friday's opener and adding a goal & 3 assists on Saturday.  Laila Edwards also recorded a hat trick plus an assist on Friday and dished out 2 more assists Saturday for 6 points, and Casey O'Brien tallied 6 points as well with 2 goals and 4 assists.  Jane Gervais & Ava McNaughton stopped the combined 28 shots they faced.  BSU goaltenders Eva Filippova and Abbie Thompson combined for 59 saves in the series.

Gophers sweep home-and-home series against SCSU – In a back-and-forth affair last Friday night in St. Cloud, Skylar Vetter stopped all 24 shots she faced from the Huskies, Abbey Murphy netted her 28th goal of the season on a second-period power play, and Minnesota came away with the 1-0 shutout victory to open their weekend series.  Jojo Chobak made 19 saves for SCSU.  Moving to Ridder Arena for Saturday's rematch, Murphy again opened the scoring with goal #29 in the first period, but Avery Farrell knotted the score for St. Cloud State in the second stanza.  However, Ella Huber lit the lamp only 13 seconds into the third frame, Madison Kaiser extended the lead to 3-1 with 6:43 to play, and Huber & Ava Lindsay each tacked on an empty-netter for a 5-1 win and the sweep.  Lucy Morgan stopped 21 of 22 shots for Minnesota, while Sanni Ahola made 24 saves for the Huskies.

Home ice clinched for WCHA quarterfinal series – With Friday night's victory, the Gopher Women's Hockey team clinched a top-four finish in the WCHA's final regular-season standings and home ice at Ridder Arena for the quarterfinal round of the 2024 league playoffs, occurring March 1, 2, and (if necessary) 3.  We also note that Saturday's win locked in a top-three position.

Vetter earns league honor after shutout in St. Cloud

Minnesota junior Skylar Vetter was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week following her 24-save shutout performance Friday night on the road against St. Cloud State.  The award is the ninth Player of the Week honor in Vetter's career and her second of the season.

Congratulations, Skylar!!

Primerano named as seventh member of 2024-'25 freshman class

Gopher Women's Hockey and head coach Brad Frost named Canadian defender Chloe Primerano (RINK Hockey Academy / Kelowna, BC) as an incoming 2024-2025 freshman on Monday.

Primerano made headlines at the recent 2024 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship, being named tournament MVP with Team Canada after her 16-point (8g, 8a) performance in only 6 games, the most scoring ever by a defender at the U18 WWC.

Primerano will join previously-announced recruits Hannah Clark, Kendra Distad, Gracie Graham, Carly Humphrey, Kate Kosobud, and Ayla Puppe as members of the incoming freshman class.  We send a warm welcome to Chloe and look forward to seeing all seven in the Maroon & Gold next fall!!

Canada wins three-straight over U.S. to claim Rivalry Series

A pair of three-goal third-period performances led the Canada National Women's Hockey team to 4-2 and 3-0 wins over their American counterparts in Games 5 & 6 of the 2023-2024 Rivalry Series last week.  Gopher alumnae Kelly Pannek and Emily Brown each earned assists on Hayley Scammura's opening goal for Team USA in Game 5 last Wednesday in Saskatoon, SK, and the Americans took a 2-1 lead into the final frame, but Ashton Bell, Renata Fast, and Laura Stacey (empty-net) earned the win for the Canadians.  Friday in Regina, SK, the teams skated a scoreless first 40 minutes, but Natalie Spooner (PP), Emily Clark, and Sarah Nurse lit the lamp in the third and Emmerance Maschmeyer posted a 27-save shutout.

Returning south of the border for a deciding Game 7 in St. Paul, Spooner & Marie-Philip Poulin each lit the lamp on the power play for Team Canada, and Bell extended their lead to 3-0 just past the midway point of the contest.  Gopher alum Grace Zumwinkle gave U.S. fans a little hope when she pickpocketed Canadian goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens and scored short-handed, but Spooner lit the lamp again 58 seconds later and Emma Maltais tallied twice to wrap up a 6-1 victory, completing the 4 games to 3 series comeback win after being down 3-0.

The teams will next meet at the 2024 IIHF Women's World Championship, being playing April 3 through 14 at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York.

#5/5 Minnesota Golden Gophers (22-5-1, 16-5-1-1 in WCHA)
vs. #10/10 St. Cloud State Univ. Huskies (15-12-1, 10-11-1-0)

Friday, February 9 at 6:00 p.m. - Herb Brooks National Hockey Center – St. Cloud
Saturday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m. – Ridder Arena

Just about every weekend for the Gopher Women's Hockey team is a rivalry series, and this weekend is no different as they face the St. Cloud State University Huskies in home-and-home action.  The puck drops Friday, February 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud; the teams then move to Ridder Arena for the rematch Saturday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m.

Saturday notes – Even if you're not planning on attending our Power Play Club Chalk Talk on Saturday, we encourage early arrival at Ridder Arena as the Gopher Men's Hockey team will be in action next door at 3M Arena at Mariucci starting at 3:00 p.m.

Saturday is also Fan Appreciation Day at Ridder, featuring extra t-shirt tosses, random prize drawings with in-game seat deliveries, $5 footlong hot dogs and more!  On top of that, the team will be recognizing National Girls & Women in Sports Day!

Game coverage – Video from both contests will be streamed on the B1G+ subscription service, and free audio play-by-play will be on GopherSports.com (Friday and Saturday) starting 15 to 20 minutes before puck drop.

This season against St. Cloud State – Scoring has been at a premium between the Gophers & Huskies as they combined for only 5 goals in their first two meetings.  In Minnesota's home opener at Ridder in October, Ava Lindsay cleaned up the rebound of an initial shot by Emily Zumwinkle in the 2nd period and Taylor Stewart doubled the lead with a short-handed bouncer into an empty net despite a deflection off a Huskies defender's stick; SCSU's Avery Farrell broke up the shutout bid, lighting the lamp with 5.2 seconds remaining, but Skylar Vetter's 14 saves were enough for a 2-1 win.  Emma Kreisz assisted on both Gophers goals, and St. Cloud State netminder Jojo Chobak stopped 29 shots.  In the second game, occurring at the National Hockey Center in December, Vetter stopped another 29 of 30 shots on goal and Peyton Hemp scored on a first-period power play, but Addi Scribner knotted the score for the Huskies and Sanni Ahola made 27 saves through overtime for a 1-1 tie.  The Gophers earned the "bonus point" in the league standings when Ella Huber and Allie Franco found the back of the net for the Gophers in the subsequent shootout while Vetter stopped both shots she faced from St. Cloud State.

Analyzing the Huskies – As we documented prior to their previous meetings against the Gophers, St. Cloud State is trying to earn home ice for the WCHA quarterfinals for the first time since 2009-2010.  However, a current five-game losing skid has put a damper on that objective by dropping them to fifth place, two points behind Minnesota Duluth.

Veteran players have led St. Cloud State so far this season.  Fifth-year forward Klára Hymlárová (#12) has a team-high 23 points and 15 assists, plus 8 goals of her own.  Fellow grad student Katie Kaufman (#10) is second in scoring with 18 points on 4 goals & 14 assists.  Senior Emma Gentry (#20) has a team-leading 9 goals while adding 5 assists for 14 points.  Freshman Alice Sauriol (#4) is the lone underclassman in the top-five in scoring; she and grad student Taylor Lind (#13) each have 6 goals & 8 assists, joining Gentry with 14 points apiece.

Eight (8) of SCSU's 15 wins have been by shutout.  Senior Sanni Ahola (#1) has five of those shutouts, posting a 9-4-1 record in her 14 starts with a .947 save percentage (2nd in the WCHA) and 1.36 goals-against average (3rd in the WCHA).  Fellow senior Jojo Chobak (#29) has the other 3 shutouts, a .933 SV% (5th in the WCHA) and a 1.87 GAA, but only a 6-8-0 record.  Freshman Paige Hoogendam (#31) has not seen any official action.

Last weekend for St. Cloud State – The Huskies took a pair of 1-0 leads on the road at Wisconsin but couldn't hold those leads, being swept 2-1 (OT) and 5-2.  Taylor Lind, Alice Sauriol, and Emma Gentry (PP) lit the lamp for St. Cloud State and Katie Kaufman dished out two assists.  Caroline Harvey netted the overtime gamewinner for the Badgers on Saturday and added a power-play goal & an assist Sunday, Lacey Eden recorded a goal & 3 helpers, Laney Potter scored twice, and Casey O'Brien dished out four assists in the series.  Despite taking the loss on Saturday, SCSU's Jojo Chobak was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week for her 45-save performance.  Sanni Ahola stopped 27 shots for the Huskies on Sunday.  UW netminder Jane Gervais stopped 24 of 25 shots Saturday, and Ava McNaughton made 23 saves Sunday.

Gophers complete season sweep of St. Thomas – The visiting Tommies took a 1-0 lead Friday at Ridder Arena as Nicole Vallario lit the lamp, but Abbey Murphy & Josefin Bouveng each lit the lamp and assisted on the other's goal, Ella Huber assisted on both, and Madison Kaiser added an empty-netter with 22.1 seconds to play for a 3-1 Gopher victory.  Lucy Morgan made 17 saves for the win, while former Gopher Olivia King stopped 18 shots for UST.  Bouveng netted her second goal of the weekend on a power play to put Minnesota up 1-0 on Saturday, but Lauren Stenslie knotted the score for St. Thomas a minute later.  Murphy gave the Gophers a 2-1 lead in the second period, but Ella Boerger tied the score again for the Tommies less than two minutes later.  Finally, Emma Kreisz tallied the Gophers' third power-play goal of the weekend to go up 3-2, Murphy added her third goal of the weekend, and Peyton Hemp also lit the lamp for a 5-2 win.  Skylar Vetter stopped 14 shots, while King made another 29 saves.  Murphy finished the weekend with 5 points, adding a second assist to her 3 goals, while Bouveng had a 4-point series (2g, 2a), Kreisz had a pair of assists to accompany her goal, and Huber dished out her third assist of the weekend on Saturday.

Rivalry Series resumes tonight, concludes Sunday in St. Paul
Gopher alumnae Brown, Heise, Pannek, Zumwinkle on Team USA roster

As we shared last week, Minnesota Women's Hockey alumnae Emily Brown, Taylor Heise, Kelly Pannek, and Grace Zumwinkle have been named to the 25-player U.S. National Team roster for the final three games of the 2023-2024 Rivalry Series against Canada.  Team USA holds a 3 games to 1 lead in the series and can clinch with a win in any of the remaining contests.

Action in the Rivalry Series resumes tonight – Wednesday, February 7 – when the teams meet in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at 7 p.m. CT.  They'll play again in Regina, SK, on Friday night, February 9 at 7 p.m. CT before concluding the series on Sunday afternoon, February 11, at 1 p.m. CT at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Tickets for Sunday's game at Xcel Energy Center are available through Ticketmaster.com.  All three contests will be televised live on NHL Network.

#5/5 Minnesota Golden Gophers (20-5-1, 14-5-1-1 in WCHA)
vs.
University of St. Thomas Tommies (8-18-1, 2-17-1-1)

Friday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 3 at 4:30 p.m.
Both games at Ridder Arena

The newest rivalry will get its next chapter as the Gopher Women's Hockey team hosts the University of St. Thomas Tommies at Ridder Arena this weekend.  Action begins on Friday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m. and continues Saturday, February 3 at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday schedule reminder and traffic alert – We emphasize the 4:30 p.m. start time on Saturday, which is a change from the original schedule published before the start of the season.  We also share that the Gopher Men's Basketball team is playing at Williams Arena earlier that afternoon and will be letting out around 3:30 p.m., so those of you coming to Ridder Arena are encouraged to take proper care around campus due to increased vehicular & pedestrian traffic.

Game coverage – For the fourth series in a row, Saturday's game will be televised on Fox 9+ (channel finder).  Otherwise, you can find both contests streamed on the B1G+ subscription service, and the free audio play-by-play will be on GopherSports.com (Friday and Saturday) starting 15 to 20 minutes before puck drop.

Last time against St. Thomas – Abbey Murphy posted a 4-goal, 2-assist weekend and Skylar Vetter & Lucy Morgan stopped all 43 shots they faced (combined) as Minnesota swept the Tommies, 8-0 at Xcel Energy Center to open the series and 4-0 at St. Thomas Ice Arena in the rematch.  Murphy scored the Gophers' first three goals for a natural hat trick, including a short-handed tally, and Vetter made 27 saves at the X.  The Gophers were held scoreless over the first 43 minutes in Mendota Heights, but Emma Kreisz netted her first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winning tally, on a power play; at the other end, Morgan made 16 saves to blank UST.  In the series, Ella Huber lit the lamp twice and added an assist, while Josefin Bouveng scored her first goal of the season and dished out two helpers.  Emma Conner, Peyton Hemp, Audrey Wethington (PP) & Nelli Laitinen joined Bouveng in recording their first goals of the season.  Madeline Wethington dished out 3 assists, and Lauren O'Hara earned her first collegiate point with an assist.

Analyzing the Tommies – Like Minnesota State, St. Thomas is 6-1-0 in non-conference play.  However, they have struggled in WCHA action this season with only 2 wins and 8 standings points in 20 contests, lighting the lamp only 24 times in those games while yielding 81 goals to their conference opponents.

Youth is the story for the Tommies, with 4 of their top 6 scorers being freshmen.  Ella Boerger (#15) has a team-high 19 points and 9 goals while dishing out 10 assists.  Rylee Bartz (#6) is second in scoring with 18 points, posting a team-high 11 assists and lighting the lamp 7 times herself.  Ellah Hause (#18) is fourth with 10 points on 5 goals & 5 assists, and Maddie Brown (#17) is tied for fifth with 9 points on 5 goals & 4 assists.  Junior defender Nicole Vallerio (#26), a member of the Swiss National Team, is third in team scoring, recording 4 goals & 8 assists for 12 points.

UST has relied on two graduate transfers for much of their goaltending.  Former Gopher Olivia King (#1) is 5-7-1 in 13 starts, posting a 3.00 goals-against average and .889 save percentage, while Calla Frank (#32), formerly at Minnesota State, is 3-8-0 with a 3.99 GAA and .886 SV%.  Sophomore Maggie Malecha (#33) has seen action in 5 games, going 0-3-0 in her three starts, posting a 4.70 GAA and .885 SV%.

Last weekend for St. Thomas – Maddie Clough recorded a goal & an assist and Nicole Vallario dished out two helpers, all on the power play, to turn a 1-0 deficit to Bemidji State into a 2-1 lead for the Tommies.  Unfortunately for UST, Makenna Deering netted an extra-attacker goal for the Beavers with 1:25 left in regulation to knot the score, and neither team found the back of the net in overtime, resulting in a 2-2 tie.  Clough tallied the only goal of the subsequent shootout to give the Tommies the third point in the WCHA standings.  In the rematch, Ella Boerger and Haley Maxwell scored for St. Thomas to erase a pair of one-goal deficits after BSU goals by Taylor Nelson and Alyssa Watkins, but Watkins lit the lamp again with 14:42 to play and Kayla Santl added an empty-netter for a 4-2 Bemidji State victory.  Olivia King (UST) and Eva Filippova (BSU) were between the pipes for both games; King made a combined 45 saves, while Filippova stopped 57 shots.

Gophers persevere for sweep of Minnesota State – Ella Huber, Abbey Murphy, and Peyton Hemp each recorded a goal & an assist in the first 40 minutes of their game against MSU at Ridder Arena to put the Gophers up 3-0 at the second intermission, but the Mavericks evened the score with 3 goals on their first 5 shots of the third period; Jamie Nelson lit the lamp twice and assisted on Jenessa Gazdik's game-tying power-play goal.  However, the Gophers earned their own power play with 7:07 to play and Murphy buried the go-ahead goal 19 seconds later after a cross-ice pass from Huber.  Lucy Morgan shut the door the rest of the way, finishing with 24 saves, to give the Maroon & Gold a 4-3 win.  Suzette Faucher made 19 saves for Minnesota State.  In the rematch in Mankato, Josefin Bouveng buried a long bomb on a first-period power play to put the Gophers up 1-0, but MSU netminder Hailey Hansen stopped the other 26 shots she faced in regulation.  Meanwhile, Kennedy Bobyck knotted the score for the Mavericks 9:17 into the third period, forcing overtime.  In the extra period, Nelli Laitinen carried the puck into the offensive zone, drawing the attention of two Minnesota State players; Laitinen dropped the puck into an open area for Murphy, who then found Hemp driving the net for the game-winning goal.  Skylar Vetter earned the win, stopping 15 of 16 shots.  Murphy (2g, 2a) and Huber (1g, 3a) each posted 4-point weekends while Hemp (2g, 1a) & Bouveng (1g, 2a) each tallied 3 points.

#5/5 Minnesota Golden Gophers (18-5-1, 12-5-1-1 in WCHA)
vs.
Minnesota State University Mavericks (10-15-0, 4-14-0-0)

Friday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m. – Ridder Arena
Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. - Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center – Mankato

After earning a sweep in their first road series of 2024, the Gopher Women's Hockey team plays their first home-and-home series of the calendar year, taking on the Minnesota State University Mavericks.  Action begins at Ridder Arena on Friday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m. before relocating to the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato for the second game on Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m.

Game coverage – As with last weekend, Saturday's game will be televised on Fox 9+ (channel finder), and video from both games will be streamed on the B1G+ subscription service.  Free audio play-by-play can be found on GopherSports.com (Friday and Saturday) starting 15 to 20 minutes before each contest.

Last time against Minnesota State – The Mavericks took 1-0 leads in both games of their November home-and-home series against the Gophers when Whitney Tuttle scored early on Friday at Ridder Arena and Lauren Zawoyski netted her first collegiate goal Saturday in Mankato.  However, the Gophers battled back for a pair of come-from-behind victories and the weekend sweep, winning 3-1 and 2-1.  At Ridder, Abbey Murphy ripped home a power-play goal in the second period to knot the score, Nelli Laitinen lit the lamp on a blue-line bomb in the third, Ava Lindsay added a power-play insurance tally, and Lucy Morgan finished with 33 saves.  At the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, Emma Kreisz netted the second goal of her career to draw the Gophers even, Madison Kaiser put away her own rebound to take the lead with 6:14 to play, and Skylar Vetter stopped 20 shots in total for the victory.  Hailey Hansen started in net for MSU in the opener and stopped 17 of 18 shots before having to leave late in the second stanza due to injury; Suzette Faucher played the rest of the weekend and made a combined 44 saves in just over four periods of action.

Analyzing the Mavericks – Though Minnesota State is 6-1-0 in non-conference play and 3-1-0 in league games against Bemidji State and St. Thomas, they are 1-13-0 against the rest of the WCHA, getting only a 2-1 win two weekends ago against St. Cloud State.  In total, they've been slightly outscored, 76-69 and their penalty kill rate is notably below 80%, allowing 15 goals on 67 opportunities.

The Mavericks boast two players who have passed the 20-point mark for the season.  Senior Sydney Langseth (#3) has a team-leading 26 points & 15 assists, and her own 11 goals are second on the squad.  Sophomore Whitney Tuttle (#7) has 23 points on 9 goals & 14 assists.  Senior Jamie Nelson (#10) has a team-high 13 goals plus 6 assists for 19 points, while sophomore Taylor Otremba (#24) has 17 points on 6 goals and 11 helpers.

Junior Suzette Faucher (#31) has seen the most playing time between the pipes for MSU, recording a 3-8-0 mark with a 3.10 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage.  Freshman Hailey Hansen (#33) is 1-2-0 with one no decision (against the Gophers), posting a 3.84 GAA and .872 SV%.  Sophomore Avery Stilwell (#1) remains on the Mavericks' roster as the emergency backup, but senior Lauren Barbro is no longer listed on their roster after going 6-5-0 in 11 starts earlier this season with one shutout, a 2.62 GAA, and a .904 SV%.

Last action for Minnesota State – The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead early in the second period of the opener against Wisconsin in Mankato, getting goals from Jamie Nelson (SH) and Taylor Otremba, but Cassie Hall & Kelly Gorbatenko knotted the score for the Badgers after 40 minutes and Kirsten Simms lit the lamp in the third stanza for a 3-2 UW victory.  The rematch started with fireworks as Vivian Jungels & Casey O'Brien scored for Wisconsin and Sydney Langseth lit the lamp for Minnesota State, all within the first 2½ minutes, but the Badgers extended their lead to 4-2 in the second period and added three more goals in the third for a 7-2 victory and the road sweep.  Langseth finished the series with 2 points, assisting on Otremba's goal to go with her own, while Whitney Tuttle dished out two assists.  O'Brien led the Badgers with 5 points on her goal plus 4 assists, while Simms tallied a second goal plus two assists.  Suzette Faucher stopped 34 of 37 shots for MSU on Friday and Hailey Hansen made 30 saves Saturday.

Gophers sweep Beavers on the road – First-period goals by Josefin Bouveng & Allie Franco just 45 seconds apart and a 24-save performance by Lucy Morgan earned Minnesota a 2-0 shutout victory over Bemidji State at the Sanford Center on Friday night.  Franco's goal was her first of the season.  Khloe Lund got BSU on the board in the first period of the rematch, scoring on a shot appearing to be deflected off a Gopher stick, but Emma Kreisz scored on a second-period power play, Ava Lindsay also converted a power play in the third period to put Minnesota in the lead, Bouveng jumped on a rebound to add an insurance goal, and Skylar Vetter also made 24 saves for a 3-1 win and a series sweep.  Beavers goaltender Eva Filippova played both games, stopping a combined 67 shots.  Kreisz finished the weekend with 3 points, adding two assists to her goal, and Bouveng has now found the back of the net in 5-straight games against BSU.

Analyzing the Beavers – Bemidji State has yet to earn a standings point against the top five teams in the WCHA, having only gotten wins over Minnesota State (in OT) and St. Thomas.  They've also posted only a 1-4-1 non-conference record and have been outscored 97-27 in all contests.

Two Beavers have reached the 10-point mark in total scoring: senior Taylor Nelson (#8) has 6 goals & 5 assists, while freshman Hailey Armstrong (#29) has a team-leading 9 goals plus one assist.  Senior Gabbie Smith (#20) is third in scoring with one goal and 8 assists.

Last time against Ohio State – A trip to Columbus at the end of October resulted in the Gophers returning home with only one point in the WCHA standings, falling to the Buckeyes 4-3 in overtime and 6-5.  Offensively, Josefin Bouveng posted a 5-point series on a goal & 4 assists, and the trio of Ella Huber, Nelli Laitinen, and Abbey Murphy each added 2 goals & 2 assists; Laitinen was honored as WCHA Defender of the Week.  Unfortunately, OSU's Jenn Gardiner took WCHA Forward of the Week honors for her 3-goal, 3-assist weekend, Hannah Bilka added a goal and 3 helpers, and Jocelyn Amos was named Rookie of the Week with 2 goals and an assist.  Skylar Vetter was between the pipes for the Gophers in both games, stopping a career-high 52 shots on Friday and making another 46 saves on Saturday but yielding 10 goals.  Raygan Kirk made 25 saves for Ohio State in the weekend opener and Amanda Thiele stopped 23 shots in the rematch.

Analyzing the Buckeyes – After winning their first WCHA Regular Season Championship in 2022-2023, Ohio State is atop the league standings again at the midway point of the 2023-2024 conference schedule.  They have only one loss is WCHA play (coming in early December, a 2-1 upset by St. Cloud State) and they lead the league in both goals scored and allowed per game (4.71 and 1.50, respectively) in conference action.  All that said, this weekend's games are the first for OSU since going on their holiday break.

A trio of Buckeyes have each recorded 20 or more points: fifth-year forward Jenn Gardiner (#12) has a team-high 11 goals plus 12 assists, fellow grad student Hanna Bilka (#9) has an OSU-leading 16 assists plus six goals of her own, and senior Kiera Zanon (#21) has 10 goals and 10 helpers.  Another grad student, Hadley Hartmetz (#6), is fourth in team scoring with 18 points on 4 goals and 14 assists.

Last action for Ohio State – Cayla Barnes, Jenna Buglioni, and Hadley Hartmetz each tallied a goal & two assists, and Raygan Kirk & Amanda Thiele combined to stop 42 of 44 shots for the Buckeyes, defeating Minnesota State 6-1 and 4-1 in Columbus the second weekend of December.

Abbey Murphy recorded 3 points Friday on a goal & two assists and Madeline Wethington lit the lamp in each game as Minnesota swept the visiting Huskies, 5-3 & 3-1.  UConn took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on Friday on goals by Kathryn Stockdale and Ainsley Svetek (PP), but Murphy and Maggie Nicholson evened the score before the second intermission.  Madeline Wethington put the Gophers ahead 8:19 into the third period and Audrey Wethington doubled the lead less than three minutes later; the Huskies scored 68 seconds after that to pull back within one, but Peyton Hemp converted a late power play and Lucy Morgan made 29 saves for the win.  In the rematch, Madeline Wethington put Minnesota up just 2:48 into the contest, and Josefin Bouveng (PP) & Lauren O'Hara scored in the second period.  UConn's Megan Woodworth netted her second goal of the weekend early in the third stanza, but Skylar Vetter shut the door on the Huskies the rest of the way to get the win.  UConn netminder Tia Chan played both games, stopping 67 combined shots.

Zumwinkle named inaugural PWHL #1 Star of the Week
Heise scores Minnesota's first goal; Pannek, Stecklein tally assists

Gopher Women's Hockey alumna Grace Zumwinkle was named the PWHL's inaugural #1 Star of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.  The honor comes after a 4-goal outburst in Minnesota's first two games, including the PWHL's first-ever hat trick in Minnesota's home opener at Xcel Energy Center against Montreal this past Saturday.

Zumwinkle's four goals came after linemate and fellow Gopher Taylor Heise, the first overall selection in the PWHL Draft in September, also made history by being the first player to light the lamp for Minnesota.  Heise scored unassisted in the first period of the franchise's opening game, on the road at Boston last Wednesday night.

We also send kudos to two other Minnesota players, Gopher alums Kelly Pannek & Lee Stecklein.  Both recorded their first PWHL points on Saturday; Pannek dished out a pair of assists, and Stecklein recorded a helper on Zumwinkle's third goal of the contest.
