Gophers fall in conference semifinal to UMD in double OT; Wisconsin wins WCHA Playoff Championship
Minnesota Duluth goaltender Maddie Rooney made 62 saves, 25 of which came after regulation, and Lara Stalder lit the lamp at 11:29 of the 2nd overtime to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 WCHA Women's Hockey semifinal victory over Minnesota. UMD's Kateřina Mrázová and Gopher Sarah Potomak traded second-period goals just 67 seconds apart, and Sidney Peters made 39 saves for Minnesota.
In the other semifinal, Wisconsin's Sydney McKibbon and North Dakota's Amy Menke scored in the second period, but Emily Clark lit the lamp with 2:43 to go in the third period to send the Badgers in the championship game. UND goaltender Lexie Shaw made 47 saves, while Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped 18 shots.
The USA Hockey Foundation has named Wisconsin senior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, Clarkson senior forward Cayley Mercer, and Minnesota Duluth senior forward Lara Stalder as the Top-3 Finalists for the 2017 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award.
Desbiens is a repeat Top-3 Finalist for the award, currently holding the lead in save percentage (.963), goals-against average (0.69), wins (25) and shutouts (15); she also holds the NCAA records for career shutouts (53) and single-season shutouts (21, 2015-16). Mercer is the NCAA leader with 25 goals this season, and is tied for third nationally in points (55), tied for four in power-play goals (6), and is sixth in points per game (1.53). Stalder is second in the NCAA in points per game (1.66), fifth in total points (53), tied for third in goals per game (0.69) and fourth in assists per game (0.97).
WCHA scoring champion Kelly Pannek and Gopher Women's Hockey captain Lee Stecklein were named to the All-WCHA First Team yesterday as the league announced its postseason awards. The honor marks Stecklein's third-consecutive appearance on the First Team.
